2.00.11 - Dry Bulk Tank

"Dry Bulk Tank" – the name itself speaks about the application of this type of trailers. But actually cement is the most widely used cargo which transportation these semitrailers are used for. They are also used for unpacked transportation of any fine-dispersed loose cargoes, powdery and pulverulent materials – building plaster, mineral powders, fertilizers, mixed fodders, flour, sugar, salt and even grain. One of the bulk ships features is that in case of necessity they can be easily converted for bulk cargoes transportation.
The design of modern dry bulk tanks in many respects is defined by the cargo properties. For cement transportation it is necessary first of all to provide a high degree of tightness to protect against moisture and aeration. Therefore a dry bulk tank is in fact a tank, with some additional design features. In the "body" of such a tank depending on its size there are, as a rule, from 3 up to 6 tanks for a cargo with a horizontal or vertical arrangement. The bottom part of each tank has a cone-shaped form necessary for unloading which is done through the bottom. Figuratively speaking, it is possible to call a dry bulk tank some kind of a "hybrid" of a tank and a hopper. To accelerate loading-unloading dry bulk tanks are equipped with special compressor-activated pneumatic or vacuum-pneumatic systems with an electric drive or the tractor power takeoff drive.
In order to decrease semitrailer own weight and to protect against corrosion aluminium is usually used for manufacturing, but on occasion other materials can be used – stainless or high-alloy steel. In particular, bulk ships intended for transportation of foodstuff are made of high-alloy steel. The useful volume of the dry-bulk tanks and bulkers designed for the main-line transportations, usually is within the limits from 28 up to 56 cubic meters (1000 – 2000 cubic foot) , and carrying capacity – from 35 up to 60 ton. Depending on their capacity semitrailers are manufactured with 2, 3 or 4 axles.
Typical characteristics of the two-axle dry-bulk tank with 1600 cubic foot volume:
• body dimensions – 42' x 102" x 120"
• weight – 11–12 thousand lbs
• payload – up to 110 thousand lbs
