End-dump semitrailers are designed for transportation of various kinds of friable cargoes: ground, sand, gravel, rubble, ore and many others, up to scrap metal. Taking into consideration every possible models and versions the dump truck is one of the greatest classes of semitrailers, which is caused by a variety of cargoes and their properties, and, accordingly, the requirements for the means of transportation. The basic characteristics according which end-dump semitrailers are sectioned into various kinds, include:
• a mode of unloading – single-sided (back) or three-sided (back and lateral)
• presence or absence of a frame
• material of manufacturing (steel, aluminium, bimetallic and composite materials)
• number of shafts (double-axle and simple multi-axle, multi-axle with an elevating shaft)
• the body dimensions and style.
The most widespread type is dump truck with single-sided unloading since such type of semitrailer has a simpler design, smaller own weight and, accordingly, is capable to contain more cargo.
Large-size semitrailers are used basically for transportation of easy cargoes (with low firmness); the bodies and frames are usually aluminium, a suspension – pneumatic. Semitrailers of big carrying capacity, are designed for transportation of high density firm cargoes (for example, rock), they frequently have smaller volume, are made of steel and are equipped with a spring suspension. The basic characteristics of end-dump semitrailers:
• body max dimensions – 42' x 102" x 80"
• dump angle – till 50 degrees
• tonnage – till 88.2 thousand lbs
• weight – till 24.2 thousand lbs
The given parameters are rather relative, since there is actually a very strong differentiation of end-dump semitrailers characteristics. For example, use of aluminium allows a noticeable reduction of a semitrailer own weight – trailers of frameless designs weighing nearly 12 thousand lbs with the body length of 39' are produced. Finally, all is defined by the properties of cargoes which transportation is provided by various versions of dump trucks. Moreover the firms-manufacturers frequently differentiate trailers design not only depending on the purpose, but also taking into account requirements of specific customers, working by the principle: "Options are Limited only by Your Imagination".
