This kind of semitrailers is intended mainly for two standard 20-feet or one 40-feet marine containers, though this does not rule out other kinds of loads provided that the load is fixed properly to the platform.
Naturally, the characteristics of platforms depend directly on the dimensions and tonnage of the containers themselves. According to ISO (International Standards Organization) standards, the containers should have these parameters:
20-feet container:
• outside dimensions – 6096 x 2370 x 2591 mm
• maximum gross weight – 24 t
40-feet container:
• outside dimensions – 12192 x 2438 x 2591 mm
• maximum gross weight – 30,48 t.
Thus, the tonnage of a platform can reach 48 ton and the outside dimensions fit into the numbers, usual for semitrailers.
From the first sight, there’s nothing complicated in the platform design. In reality, is totally otherwise, taking into account high requirements on the tonnage, the technology of loading and unloading and road safety. The main goals that are met (and quite successfully) in design of modern platforms are:
• maximum reduce of the semitrailer weight while keeping the strength parameters high
• quick and reliable fastening of the load in any part of the platform (for safety and an even load distribution)
• versatility (in particular, by means of various expanding parts that can increase the working length of the semitrailer up to 14 m or more).
